Sediments with varves (nenkou) have been piling up at the bottom of Lake Suigetsu, one of the Five Lakes of Mikata, for 70,000 years. The old, 45-meter-long varves are used around the world to unravel mysteries of ancient history. The exhibitions in the Varve Museum are a must see!

  • Around 5 minutes by taxi from JR Mikata station, or around 10 minutes by rental bicycle.

Route2

  • 13 minutes by Wakasa Town Bus on the Tsunegami-Mikata Line from JR Mikata Station, disembark at Jomon Roman Park.
